How to Look

at a House

A blog with answers
to your questions about
HOME INSPECTION
and HOME MAINTENANCE

Welcome to our blog!
We want you to be an informed homebuyer, and each blog post is a question that we have answered for our friends and customers over the years. Hope they help you make a good choice for your next home.

  1. Is the existing attic insulation adequate? The effectiveness of insulation deteriorates as it compresses over time and from workmen climbing over it. We will give you an estimate of the R-value of the current attic insulation as part of your home inspection. Also, homeowners expect a higher insulation level today, so adding some blown insulation over the original material pushes it up to todays’s standards. However, when the new insulation is being installed, make sure the the contractor does not obstruct the the soffit vents at the edge of the roof. Blocked vents will stop the necessary ventilation of the attic and end up negating the gains from the new insulation.

  2. Have you explored all your alternatives with an insulation contractor? There are reflective foil panels, rigid insulation that can installed under new roofing, attic ventilation improvements, and other solutions besides just blowing more insulation in the attic.

While we hope you find this series of articles about home inspection helpful, they should not be considered an alternative to an actual home inspection by a local inspector. Also, construction standards vary in different parts of the country and it is possible that important issues related to your area may not be covered here.
